The Literary Origins of Horror Films

Some of film and televisions most daring and enduring monsters of horror first appeared in the pages of novels and short stories. From the allusions to Dracula in the first horror film of all time The House of the Devil in 1898 to the pulp and horror of the Universal Monsters in the 1940s to the resurgence of Nosferatu in 2025, the seedy rotten roots of the horror film genre are often sprung from the decomposing pages of literary terror.

This series is an exploration of classic horror stories and the films they went on to inspire.
